Need a tow truck? What to know before that happens!

No one wants or plans to get in a car accident, run out of gas, or break down on the side of the road—all of them circumstances that might require a tow. But, knowing what to do if and when one of those unfortunate things happens can sure make the experience a lot less stressful and a lot more manageable. Having a clear plan of who to call, what to do and what to expect when you need a tow truck will make an unplanned car emergency a lot easier to handle!

What to do:

  1. Put your hazard lights on, turn on your headlights, and try to move your car as far away from traffic as possible. If you can’t move it and your car is in a precarious spot, make sure you stay in your car so that you aren’t hit by unaware drivers. If you can, open the hood of your car as it will help other drivers comprehend what has happened and signal to avoid you and your car.

  2. Notify a reputable tow truck company. Do your research—read reviews and ask around to get referrals. Keep that number in your glove box with your insurance information. Look for companies that have positive reviews. If you don’t do that ahead of time, call us at Auto Collision Specialists, and we will notify a trusted company to pick up your car and deliver it to our shop. Before the tow truck operator loads your car, you should know who they are! They should be able to give you a business card and an invoice with the estimated amount. **Be aware that there are people who listen to scanners and try to scam people who have been in accidents!

  3. If you have had a collision, have the tow truck take your car straight to Auto Collision Specialists or to your other preferred auto body shop. This will save you time and money having it towed twice!

  4. Even though your belongings will be safe with a reputable tow truck company, it’s a good idea to remove all of your belongings from the car before it is towed. Take out all the important insurance information and paperwork from your glovebox as well.

Getting prepared for unfortunate events isn’t really how we want to spend our time, but should you get into an accident requiring a tow, you will know just what to do! Also remember that you always have us, Auto Collision Specialists, to help you when you need it most. We offer a lifetime repair guarantee on body and paint repairs completed by factory-trained and certified technicians.
